Aircast XP Walking Brace-Large-Pneumatic Air Cell Padding Review

Wow, the Aircast is excellence in engineering! This cast increased my mobility and comfort after breaking my foot. It was a key component of my successful recovery. I highly recommend this product. I would have preferred the shorter SP cast, probably sufficient for my metatarsal fracture, but the PA insisted on the taller XP.

While I only have one competitor's Velcro monster Franken-boot to compare it to, I suspect the Aircast is best in class. The rocker on the bottom allows you to walk almost normally. The air cells in the heel give a snug custom fit, again improving your gait, and they can be adjusted if your foot swells during the day. The Aircast is light weight and the cutouts, which reduce weight, also keep your leg from over heating. It is so simple to put on, that only a few easily understood diagrams are needed and even a child could understand them. The Velcro is all very neatly arranged to stay put, and is just the right amount in the right places. It's very easy to put on and take off, so it was not a chore to remove for showers, icing my foot, or bed, which gave me a chance to exercise more muscles than just wiggling my toes to keep pretty good flexibility and shorten the muscle rehabilitation period.

When I graduated from the Aircast to shoes, I was taking careful steps, and co-workers ask me what happened. They were surprised to hear I broke my foot because they said I walked so normally with the cast, they hadn't noticed.

While I think the Aircast is awesome, there are just a couple areas that could be improved.
1) The instruction pamphlet, which comes with the cast, should include a warning about the hazards of improper walking and recommendations for the correct shoe height and techniques for level walking with the cast. Aircast should not assume that medical professionals dispensing their casts are giving instructions to patients for proper use or having a PT/OT visit for this. They're not. Literally dozens of people on elevators and buses stopped to tell me their horror stories of associated injuries, some permanent, from differing cast and shoe heights I had hip and back problems and tremendous pain, far greater than the broken foot, until I figured it out for myself. I bought a new pair of shoes that almost got me level after I pulled out the foam insole from the cast, which I didn't want to do because it is nice and cushy. I changed my walk to bend my knees more and concentrated on keeping my hips level, kind of the effect of pretending to balance a book on your head.
2) I had some problems adjusting the ankle strap and air cells in the heel area for the proper tension during walking. I liked a little give on the ankle strap area for bending my ankle a bit, but found my foot just moved forward in the cast. This is possibly a user training issue, but perhaps more thought could go into the shape of the air cells.

My thanks go to the engineers, who designed this superior and functional cast! If the company were publicly traded, I would buy stock.
