WheelzAhead Lead manual wheelchair Review

I've been in bad need of a new wheelchair for some time now. But I didn't have a lot of money to put on one and I didn't want just a plain Jane wheelchair like the one I've been using.

The one I was using was your typical fold up chair which I had stripped of the side rails, cut several inches off of the back, and made other modifications to make it lightweight.

This chair give me all that. It is compact, nimble, pretty nice looking even if it is white instead of my preferred black.

The wheels remove easily making it a snap to place in the back seat.

I like the 3 color inserts but I'm not sure I'll be swapping that very much.

I did have to move the back wheels toward the front one notch which make pushing a lot easier for me. This was really simple though. It took less than 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if my old chair was just so worn out that it dragged, but this chair is super easy to push. It was almost effortless.

The only negatives I have so far are that the push rim is made of a fairly soft plastic. If it barely makes contact with a surface, it cuts into the plastic. I would have deducted a half star for this but it's so pliable that it was easy to remove the scratches with my fingernail. But I can foresee it being an issue. If so, I will update this review.

The other issue is that the manual only gives the minimum tire pressure allowed. It does not mention a maximum. I put 40lbs psi and that gives a good firm ride.

It would be great if the chair came in black or even neon green. But the white frame is not bad at all.

Overall, this is a very nice upgrade to the standard wheelchair for a lot less money than similar wheelchairs I've looked at.

Update after a couple of weeks of use:
I still like this chair a lot. However, I have discovered a couple of significant issues that lead me to remove a star from my rating.

The first is that removing the wheels can be fairly difficult. One of the wheels tends to be really easy and the other requires one hand pushing against the chair and the other pulling on the wheel. I normally drive a van so I don't worry with breaking the chair down. But when I need to drive my wife's car it is a nightmare. It is really difficult to hold the chair up while trying to wrestle the wheel off. Once off though, it's easy to put in the passenger's seat.

My other issue with this chair is with the removeable seat inserts. While it may seem cool to be able to swap out different colors, all the velcro that makes that possible is a total pain in the butt. Every time you want to fold the chair you have to separate the velcro between the seat and back. When traveling we just leave the velcro separated until we get to our destination. It's too much trouble separating it every time you get ready to put it back in the car.

It's still a nice chair, but it could definitely use some refining.
