OK folks, I too am an Army Officer and I need to correct a few things. First; we do not use sabers anymore as weapons. We quit doing that a long, long time ago. If you get in that kind of situation in modern warfare you are 1) in a world of hurt and 2) you will hear an order to "fix bayonets." A rifle with a bayonet is a far more effective weapon for that kind of stuff, as is an M9 pistol, a helmet or an entrenching tool. The last horse cavalry charge was on Bataan in 1942. Really, the last saber designed for combat was the M1850 (I have one of those that belonged to my gggrandfather who was a Union Officer during the Civil War). Even the 7th Cav left theirs (the US M1872) behind when they rode off to the Little Big Horn. Second; the US M1902 is NOT manufactured in the United States anymore and hasn't been for quite a while. The only US sword manufacturer anymore is Ames and they quit making the M1902 years ago. Now, if you want a new US manufactured M1902 I am sure Ames would be happy to do it for you but be prepared to pay the price.

I purchased this (Cold Steel) saber as a presentation piece for a CO that was leaving. Since we only use them for display and ceremony anymore I didn't need a top of the line saber, nor did I want a piece of crap either. Cold Steel fit the bill. This saber is heavy duty, you can feel the weight. I have two other sabers that I use; a post WWII (Eickhorn)NS Meyer made in Solingen, "West" Germany, and the other is a 1930's (with the old brown grip) model by Horstmann out of Phildelphia, PA. The Cold Steel saber is very simular to the Horstmann in size and weight. The Cold Steel has a sharp blade, a little too much for ceremony. The "US" is set up like the Horstmann which runs from point to guard and the "Eagle" is like the NS Meyer, the wings run from top to bottom of the blade. The etching on the blade is sharp and well designed. Unlike the current US M1902 it has a dark outline that makes it more visable. The only problem is they are on the reverse side when compared with my other sabers. The saber came well boxed and packaged with a cloth bag. Overall, a very decent buy, a nice looking saber that is well put together. For the price you can't beat it.

If you want a US Military "fighting" saber I would recommend an M1850 or M1872 Cavalry saber replica. One that is well designed and durable. Authenic Models you would not want to "fight with" for fear of damage to them.
